We all know that when we are trying to rank for a specific keyword for our website, duplicate content can be a major pitfall in our efforts. One of the biggest reasons behind this is the way search engines are always after fresh content that is fairly new to offer their searchers. At the end of the day you have to think that why should search engine really care about something that has already been crawled by its spiders? And on top of this, what benefits could an individual searching gain from it? None is the only answer you can give to that.
How, though, do you find out whether a particular piece of content is regarded as duplicate or not? And because duplicate content is not viewed too well by the search engines, you will want to keep on their good side. Below you can learn how this can be done in Google.
The first thing you should do is search for your site in Google using the URL. This will basically show you all the pages that have been indexed by Google thus far from your site. What you need to do next is click on every one of the links that show up on the search page. If this message appears: “to see the most relevant results we have omitted entries that are similar” it means there are pages that have been omitted because Google classes them as duplicates.
What you can do then is click on the link that asks you if you would like to carry out the search again but this time with the omitted pages included. The pages that were omitted will then show up, meaning you will be able to fix them in whatever way you think.
Granted, it is difficult to have a purely duplicate free website, but if you avoid things like reproducing articles from article directories or content you have deemed to be relevant from other websites, you should be OK.
